The route to Germany

Do you want to study at the International University of Cooperative Education in Germany or undertake linguistic or practice-orientated preparation for studies in Germany? Are you from outside the EU or EEA?

Take the right steps by following our Study Compass:

1. As a citizen of Andorra, Australia, Canada, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, South Korea, Switzerland or the USA, you do not require a visa for entry. However, for stays of longer than three months, you need resident status in the form of a residence permit for the purpose of study. Immediately after entry, please refer to your study advisor at your chosen place of study or our International Office, IBA International gGmbH*. Please take note of the certification and documentation listed below in the table (second row from bottom) to be submitted. Should you have any questions, the International Office (IO) is able to assist you.

2. As a citizen of another country you require a visa for entry, for which you must apply in your home country. The following Study Compass should guide you:

University of cooperative education

Receipt of application for study at the university of cooperative education or participation in a language course at F+U confirmed to the German embassy in the home country of the participant / study applicant for the purpose of granting a visa for residence in Germany.

Inspection of visa application documents.

4-8 weeks according to individual process (visa process can take longer in exceptional cases).

German embassy in home country.

Issue of visa for the purpose of residence in Germany, for participation in a language course / for application to study, with validity of maximum three months.

Up to 1 week prior to start of the intended activity.

Entry into Germany.

Immediately following entry into Germany

Submission of documents required for issuing the residence permit:
- Current biometric passport photo
- Health insurance
- Bank: evidence of liquidity. For each month of residence 638 Euros credit balance (statutory minimum Bafög rate).

Immediately after inspection (as a rule within ten working days).

IO / foreigners’ registration office at the place of study.

Appointment at the foreigners’ registration office: Inspection of all documents (documents from the previous stage must be submitted here) and extension of the residence entitlement for the purpose of participating in the activity in Germany (1 to max. 2 years). For dual study, a rental contract must also be presented. In Erfurt, a rental contract must be presented by foreigners in all cases.
